Why The Chevy Volt Is Attracting Wealthy Buyers

AOL.com -- In order for the Chevy Volt to really be a success, the car needs to be affordable for the masses.

But for now, the car is mostly the province of the wealthy. General Motors, which makes the Volt, said Monday that the average income of Volt buyers is a whopping $175,000 a year. That rarefied space is usually reserved for buyers of German luxury cars.

"The Volt appeals to an affluent, progressive demographic," says Bill Visnic, senior editor for Edmunds.com "It's rare. It's hard to get one. ... It's the same reason that people buy the really rare exotic cars: Because other people can't have one."

That's the only reason why the affluent buy the Volt? It sure missed the market with everyone else.

If GM wants the Volt to be a success it should start, by making it affordable to the masses.

The affluent didn't get that way by spending unwisely and not saving. They think ahead.

If I had $40k to spend on a car, I surely wouldn't spend it on a Volt.

This is what happens when government decides what is good for the people and what is not.

A taxpayer subsidized industry (and in the case of GM, taxpayer owned) producing a product that doesn't meet peoples' needs and few can afford; but, of course, that few who CAN afford it also receive a tax credit for buying it.

Maybe it appeals to them simply because they are the ones that can afford it.

Wouldn't you think GM would be able to sell more Volts if the price was more affordable. Then they would really be able to turn around the auto industry.

It's not because it is rare it is because it is so expensive. Only the rich can afford it.

IT's not that hard to buy one, Any Chevy dealer would be Glad to give you one, if you dropped in with $40,000.

They are so rare, not because they only built a few, they're so rare because very few people want one. (who can afford one)

Is that so??? Well they must have forgotten why Henry ford figured out how to make mass production so the average person could afford his 'T' . GM and the rest need to refigure this equation.

GM never, and still doesn't want to sell EVs. The execs are afraid their buddies in big oil would call them "liberals" behind their backs at the country club.

Guess that leaves me out of the running.

That's ok, I am a truck man anyway.

Not to mention the not being the wealthy part either.
