Stanford pioneering a wireless electric highway

CNET -- Stanford researches may have solved the problem of range anxiety by wireless charging technology that could one day create an electric highway.

Wireless recharging already is used by some electric vehicle charging stations to fill up batteries without cords or plugging into an outlet. MIT helped pioneer this technology and spun it off into a wireless charging startup, WiTricity. However, Stanford researchers improved on this concept and devised a way to transmit 10 kilowatts of electric power across a 6.5-foot distance with minimal energy loss. By overcoming transmitting electricity across a significant distance, researchers will make it possible to pave a highway with wireless conduits that can provide addition power to EVs and let them operate indefinitely.

Theoretically, coils b

And I wonder, who will be the first to get shocked by the highway!

IF we can't keep up the current "normal" infrastructure what can we realistically expect for electric. Not to mention so many people are wary of electric cars. Good idea time will tell about the execution. I imagine people were skeptical about the first cars too.

It's going to cost a fortune to wire up all the roads, and besides the DPW can't even keep up with potholes.

Right... Tesla had a working prototype, but it has not worked out during the last 70 years.

Is this really pioneering when somebody reads a science fiction book written in the fifties and "gets a bright idea"?

not sure we have too many actual pioneers anymore, they go back to history and resurrect old technology.

So what is the cost per foot, yard, mile for auto charging stations built into the highways? Remember supply and demand will dictated if the project is REALLY feasible and companies will buy into.

What a breakthrough! Who could have imagined transmitting energy via magnetic coils? Well, let's see, Michael Faraday and Nikolai Tesla are two that come easily to mind, and they were back in the 19th century. Either there's more to this story that they're not telling or else this is today's gee-whiz article we will never hear anything more about.

BIG OIL & GAS love us

Follow the science. Thanks for sharing SachiCat
Fascinating concept. Think of getting a charge up every time you stop at a light (city driving) or pause for a rest stop (highway) .... aren't we all glad that someone is thinking ahead ;0}

Hopefully they can automate the driving too so we can finally stop drunks from killing us.
