Enbridge teams with U.S. firm in $3.4-billion pipeline proposal

Edmonton Journal -- Enbridge Inc. and a partner are planning to spend up to US$3.4 billion to reconfigure a natural gas pipeline to carry oil to the eastern Gulf Coast, a market that currently relies on rail and barge for crude shipments.

Enbridge (TSX:ENB) and Houston-based Energy Transfer Partners would each own 50 per cent of the project, which would stretch more than 1,100 kilometres from an oil hub at Patoka, Ill., to the St. James hub in Louisiana.

Energy Transfer would operate the project.

Each company would invest between $1.2 billion and $1.7 billion.

The line is expected to be in service by 2015, likely carrying between 420,000 and 660,000 barrels per day of crude. It needs U.S. regulatory approvals to go ahead.

The proposal is one of many to help link move more crude from Alberta’s oilsands...

A pipeline will carry much more oil to the Gulf Coast than rail or barge with less chance of a spill happening. Big Oil and Big Gas sells fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices. The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! The price at the pump needs to go down to $2/gallon - $3, $3.50/gallon or *$4.00 is Not the new low! More Refineries are Not the answer, Stop exporting fuel is! Take care of the domestic fuel market first and above all else! Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

I thought this was what it was all about as soon as I saw the word Enbridge, the company that put the pipeline to Patoka, and Wood River Illinois refineries to process the tar sands bitumen. This company doesn't need the President's approval to build the pipeline east in my opinion as it is extending its direction, same as in Texas. If it helps out an oil thirsty east coast I am not against that. The tar sands oil did not bring down gas prices in Illinois and I suspect it will have no affect there either. While the refinery here is cashing in on bargain prices, they have never passed it on to the consumer at the pump. I expect it just reflects more quarterly profits for the refinery. Someone ask the question about our natural gas we have so much of? Big Energy is not at the moment pursuing the US market as much as they have big dollar signs on Japan, Korea, and Asia that are paying $6 a gallon for (LNG) liquefied natural gas imports. There is a problem! There is red tape and Big Energy wants the consumer to write our government to allow them to export our natural gas in the form of LNG. This would mean huge profits for Big energy at world demand prices. What do you think that would do to our country's cheap natural gas for heating or transportation? We will pay what the rest of the world is willing to pay, and what speculators want to add to that. We need the guarantee of cheap affordable energy in the USA to attract business and jobs back to America. We don't want our natural gas peddled away by Wall Street!

Imagine if the government was to do this, it would cost 4 or 5 times as much and not work when finished. They would probably repurpose it to ethanol or something else stupid.

Make them guarantee in writing that any spillage will be cleaned up and fines will be paid along with restitution to all that are affected. Then double those figures before you allow anyone to break ground.
