Drivers on Canadian West Coast paying carbon tax
Thursday, July 03, 2008
Reuters -- VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - North America's first comprehensive carbon tax is now in effect in the Canadian West Coast province of British Columbia, greeted with complaints that some gasoline stations have used the tax as cover to raise prices more than necessary.

The already-controversial tax, which took effect on Tuesday, added 2.34 Canadian cents per liter to the pump price, but some stations pushed up prices more than 4 cents, the Vancouver Sun reported on Wednesday.

British Columbia officials were not available for comment on the increases that pushed the price at some service stations to more than C$1.50 a liter, some of highest prices in Canada.

It's bad enough when the national government decides to screw the common citizen, the Canucks have the Provincial government us putting the screws to them, too. HEY Southern BC residents: Get your passports ready and visit Washington and Idaho for your gas.

The people of Canada and US should be entitled to a common sense tax that can be levied on any politician who doesn't have any common sense. The higher the level in the governent, the higher the tax. This way, all the tax money would go back into our pockets when they belong in the first place.

I'm starting to hate that word - comprehensive. When the g'ment uses it, the word seems to mean "bend over".

question is: Will they use that tax on the environment?

Not sure, someone in BC could answer better than me. But, what i can say is that Dion (the leader of the opposition party in Canada) is also going to introduce a carbon tax if he is elected. And the way it works is to tax carbon fuels, and then provide a tax cut for indiviuals and corporations. The idea is if you become more green, you will aviod the carbon tax and benifit from a lower income tax that you will have to pay. This is so stupid in my opinion. Our world works on 95% of oil, anything you buy or touch has oil somewhere in it. So unless you are a millionare and can afford a solor power house and a hydrogen car you still will be paying the tax on the things you buy, because somewhere in the manufacturing or transportation of the product will have had oil in it. With oil at 145, natural gas at 13.40, heating oil at 4, is the price not high enough to make you change your habbits? Its so stupid, it will hurt the lower and middle class since I am sure the tax you will pay will not be offset by the tax cut that you will get.

Maybe someone from BC can clarify if the BC carbon tax is similar to the Dion carbon tax.

Just another excuse to raise taxes. Our Democratic Congress just can't wait to get that here. They are already having hearings.

I always like when they say reveune neutral, that is such a crock. The person spending more on gas in the higher tax bracket will not see the same tax break as the person in a lower tax bracket with little gas expense. Once again the middle class gets the shaft.

Just another way to suck money out of peoples pockets.Call it what you want, a tax is a tax. I'll bet the POLS who voted for the tax also said "No New Taxes" before the last election.
